P0420 Error: What the Code Means and Whether You Can Keep Driving

Why does P0420 appear?
The most obvious cause is a worn or damaged catalytic converter. But that is only one possibility. PP0420 can also be caused by a faulty O₂ sensor—such as damaged wiring or a loose connector; a leak in the exhaust system; difficulties with the fuel mixture, fuel injectors, or fuel pressure; misfires; a faulty spark plug; oil or coolant entering the exhaust; and, in some cases, an issue with the control unit’s software.
That is why the P0420 code should not automatically mean “replace the catalytic converter.” If the catalytic converter was damaged because of another issue. For example, prolonged misfires or an excessively rich fuel mixture — replacing it without fixing the root cause may result in the same problem happening again.

But it’s important to note: clearing the code does not repair the catalytic converter, sensor, or exhaust system. After clearing the code, the vehicle must go through the self-diagnostic cycle again while driving. The catalytic converter monitor only activates under certain conditions, so the error may not reappear immediately after starting the engine. What other codes can appear together with P0420?
Related DTCs are very essential because they may point to the actual root cause. For example:
P0300–P030X – codes for random or intermittent misfires.
P0171 or P0172 – an excessively lean or rich fuel mixture in Bank 1, which may affect catalytic converter performance and cause P0420.
P0130–P0167 – a group of codes related to oxygen sensors and their heaters. Because O2 sensor signals are used to evaluate catalytic converter efficiency, these codes should be taken into account first.

What happens if you ignore P0420?

However, without diagnostics, it is impossible to determine exactly whether the problem lies solely with the sensor, the catalytic converter itself, or other engine systems. If P0420 is caused by misfires, an incorrect fuel mixture, or overheating, continuing to drive may accelerate the catalytic converter’s deterioration.
A damaged or overheated catalytic converter may lose efficiency, melt, or create excessive exhaust backpressure. As a result, engine power may decrease, acceleration may worsen, and fuel consumption may increase. Additionally, the vehicle will emit more harmful substances and may fail an emissions test.
Can you drive with P0420?
P0420 usually does not mean you need to stop immediately in the middle of the road if:
the Check Engine light is steady,
the vehicle runs normally
there is no loss of power, overheating, strong smell, smoke, or other serious symptoms.
However, the code should still be checked and a diagnostic inspection should be scheduled as soon as possible.
