When should I use the other types of protocol other than obd 2?

It supposed to use with old models that does not have or have very limited OBD-II support.
Also it might be used when custom (make specific protocol) have some extra parameters if compare with OBD-II
Please also note that custom protocols does not compatible with some app widgets like Economizer or Acceleration.
