I was driving my 2014 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8 TSI automatic, 6-speed earlier today when the EPC light suddenly came on. I was going about 45 mph on a city road, and had just lightly pressed the gas pedal to accelerate when I noticed a loss of power and the EPC warning appeared on the dashboard. The car felt sluggish, almost like it went into limp mode, and the throttle response became very weak. I pulled over and turned the engine off for a few minutes, then restarted it - the light stayed on, and the performance didn’t improve. No other warning lights came on, no Check Engine. Why would the EPC light come on in this situation, and is it safe to keep driving like this?

I had a similar issue with my 2015 Jetta 1.8 TSI. In my case, the EPC light came on because of a faulty throttle body. The car went into limp mode and felt very sluggish. I used the InCarDoc OBD2 app with a Bluetooth scanner to read the fault codes, and it showed a P2135 — throttle position sensor issue. If you’re getting the same symptoms, I’d definitely recommend scanning it yourself before heading to a shop. It’s safe to drive short distances, but not for long, especially if you’re losing power.

The EPC warning usually relates to throttle control, accelerator pedal position, or sometimes even the brake light switch. Since you’re seeing reduced power and delayed throttle response, I’d suggest checking for codes with an OBD2 scanner. The InCarDoc app works great with most Bluetooth adapters and gives you real-time data and stored faults. Once you know the exact code, you can narrow it down — it could be anything from a wiring issue to a failing sensor. Until then, avoid highways or steep inclines.

Same thing happened on my 2013 Jetta a few weeks ago. EPC light came on after I lightly hit the gas, and suddenly the car lost power. I borrowed a Bluetooth scanner and used the InCarDoc app on my phone to check the code — turned out to be a bad brake light switch. Replaced it for like $20 and the light disappeared. If you’ve got access to InCarDoc, definitely use it - saved me a trip to the dealer.

The EPC light usually points to an issue with the throttle system, sensors, or electronic engine controls — and what you’re describing (loss of power, sluggish throttle) sounds like the car went into limp mode to protect itself.

Even if the Check Engine Light didn’t come on, there’s probably a stored code in the ECU. I’d recommend scanning it ASAP — even a basic OBD2 app like InCarDoc or OBDeleven can help you pull the codes.

Could be something like a faulty throttle body, brake light switch, MAP sensor, or even an issue with the turbo boost control. Driving with the EPC light on isn’t ideal — it’s usually okay short-term if you need to get home, but don’t ignore it. You could lose power entirely if the fault gets worse.

Hey, I’ve had something really similar happen with my 2015 Jetta. EPC light came on right after a light throttle press, and the car suddenly lost power - felt just like limp mode. No CEL, just EPC, and weak throttle response.
In my case, it ended up being a bad throttle body sensor — it wasn’t totally dead, but was sending weird signals that triggered the EPC system. I scanned it with an OBD app and found a stored code related to throttle position.
If you’ve got a scanner, even something simple like InCarDoc, I’d definitely run a check to see what’s behind the EPC. Could also be something like a brake light switch or pedal sensor - VW's EPC system covers a bunch of stuff. I'd avoid driving it too much until you know for sure, just in case it gets worse.
