Codes P1496 and P2563 - Turbo Issues or Just Settings?

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’ve been getting two codes that appear and disappear on their own: P1496 and P2563. I know they’re related to the turbo, but I’m not sure if the turbo is actually failing - or if it’s just a tuning/setting issue.

I’m attaching a report from InCarDoc in case it helps someone better understand what’s going on.

Honestly, I’m a bit lost, and I’d really appreciate any advice. Has anyone dealt with something similar?

P2563 usually points to an issue with the turbo boost control position sensor — it could be electrical, like a faulty sensor, a corroded connector, or even a wiring issue. P1496 is also tied to the turbo control system, and doesn’t always mean your turbo is failing. Sometimes it's a sticking actuator, vacuum leak, or just bad data being sent to the ECU. Since the codes come and go, it might be something minor like a loose hose or sensor acting up intermittently. Definitely worth checking the wiring and connectors around the turbo before assuming it’s a full turbo failure.

If the codes clear themselves and the car still pulls strong, it might be software or tuning related. Have you had any remapping or chip tuning done? That can throw these codes too, depending on how the ECU is reacting.

Check your turbo actuator and the boost pressure sensor wiring. A failing actuator can cause both codes but still work "most of the time" - which would explain the codes coming and going. Not urgent if the car drives fine, but worth diagnosing soon.

Hey, I’ve had both of those codes on my 1.6 TDI not long ago. In my case, it wasn’t the turbo itself but a sticky turbo actuator and some inconsistent readings from the boost sensor. The weird part was — just like you — the codes came and went with no clear pattern.
I used InCarDoc to log boost pressure and actuator position over a few short drives. It showed that the actual boost wasn’t matching the requested boost, especially under light acceleration. That helped point me toward the actuator control rather than the turbo itself.
Might be worth checking vacuum lines too — even a small leak or weak vacuum could cause P2563. I cleaned the actuator mechanism and replaced a cracked hose, and both codes disappeared for good.

I had almost the same thing happen on my 2017 Skoda Octavia TDI — P1496 and P2563 popping in and out with no obvious performance loss. Using InCarDoc, I noticed the VGT actuator was occasionally sticking at partial load, especially after longer drives. A light clean of the actuator linkage and a recalibration with diagnostics fixed it. Might be worth checking your actuator movement in live data before assuming the turbo itself is shot.
