First of all, make sure that your Wi-Fi adapter is detected by your Android device. Not all adapters will work with "non routed" Android-devices. It is better to clarify the compatibility with the OBD2 Wi-Fi adapter form the Android reseller.

In order to connect to the Wi-Fi adapter, follow these steps:

  1. Connect Wi-Fi adapter to the diagnostic OBD-II connector
  2. Go to Settings Android -> list of Wi-Fi networks and find Wi-Fi network of your OBD2 adapter.
  3. Go to OBD InCarDoc app, move on to the settings, "Connection" select "Connection Mode" - Wi-Fi. Then fill in the fields withe adapter's data (it can be found in the manual to the adapter): IP address, Port.

What are the disadvantages when connecting to Wi-Fi adapter on Android?

The main drawback of connecting to the car OBD2 system via Wi-Fi adapter are the problems or inability to use the mobile Internet when connected to the Wi-Fi adapter.

If you are connected to the Wi-Fi via OBD2 adapter on your mobile device, you may receive a notification that you are "connected to the network without Internet access" in order to have access to the Internet, you need to setup the Internet by putting a tick "use the Internet of the card" that is, the mobile Internet.

You use-case does not quite clear. Application could keep connection and get data only from 1 device at a time. In case of a WiFi devices you also limited with OS functionality that does not allow using 2 simultaneous WiFi points connection. If you need switch to another adapter just disconnect from one and setup connection to another. Thanks!

Responding to an old post, but yes, you can connect to multiple OBD adapters when you use OBD adapters that support "infrastructure mode", like the OBD Link MX WiFi adapters. You set up a hot spot on your phone and configure the adapters to connect to your phone, instead of the other way around. While driving, I collect data from three adapters simultaneously this way.
